India at Tokyo 2020 - Our performance Today - Day 12 - 3rd Aug 2021

Athletics

Women's Javelin throw qualification - Annu Rani started off what was a disappointing day for us. She threw a 50m, 51m and 54m throw to finish last in women' Javelin. She has a seasons best of 63m.

Men's Shotput qualification - Tajinder Pal Toor threw a best of 19.99m to not qualify for the finals. As most field athletes this was much below his best of 21.49m.. He didn't even finish in top 12 of his group leave alone top 12 overall..

Hockey -

Indian men lost to Belgium in the semi finals 5-3. Belgium went up early in the first quarter and India quickly equalized and went up 2-1 in the first quarter. In the second quarter Belgium equalized 2-2. 3rd Quarter was only quarter where both teams didn't score and it was 2-2 going into the last quarter. Belgium pressed and we buckled under pressure giving away way too many PCs and Belgium converted one and scored from a stroke also to go 4-2 up with about 7 minutes left. India took off Sreejesh with 3 minutes left to add another player on the field but that was not enough and Belgium used it to score one more goal in the end to win the match 5-3. Disappointing day. Hope we come back to win the Bronze medal match up against Germany who lost to Australia in the other semis 1-3.

Wrestling -

Sonam Malik lost her first match in the round of 16. She was leading 2-0 till the last 30 seconds and lost 2 points and the Mongolian won the match. Since Sonam got her points in 1s and the opponent scored her 2 in one go the victory went to the Mongolian. The hope for repachage went bust as the Mongolian lost the next round match.

India at Tokyo 2020 - Our Performance on Day 10 & 11 - 1st & 2nd August 2021

Athletics -

Dutee chand finished last in her heat running a 23.85 much below her PB of 23. When there were questions about Sreeshankar and Irfan not sure on what basis we sent Dutee who was continuously beaten by Dhanalakshmi in both 100 and 200.

Kamalpreet Kaur finished 6th in women's discus throwing a 63.7. She had a PB of 66.59 and if she had thrown that she would have won a bronze, not to be..

Badminton

Sindhu won her match convincingly to secure the Bronze medal for India.

Boxing

Satish Kumar took on Bakhodir Jalalov in the Super Heavy Quarter Finals and lost with an unanimous decision 5-0. Satish was injured and was doubtful starter for the fight.

Equestrian

Fouaad dropped from 9th to 22nd spot at the end of Cross country leg. In the Jumping he did well to stay in top 25(finished 25th) and qualify for the finals. Finished overall 23rd in finals

Golf

Anirban finished 42nd and Udayan finished 56th. Hope Aditi does better

Hockey

Indian men defeated Great Britain 3-1 and qualified for the semis. It was a pretty good performance by the Indians. Only concern was the second half we didn't attack much and were primarily defending. When you are defending so much any opposition will find a way to score and that is what the Brits did.

On the other hand Indian women put up a pretty good performance to defeat Australia 1-0. They were attacking from the get go and kept at it till the end. India scored through Gurjit's penalty corner conversion in the second quarter.  Australia tried to press us but the mid field and defence held strong to hold on to the lead. Excellent to see both men and women in semis. Savita stood like a rock in the goal and defended beautifully.

Shooting -

Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar and Sanjeev Rajput were in action in the men's 50m 3 position rifle event. This was the last event for our shooting contingent. Aishwary started off well in the prone position shooting a 397 and was placed second. Things went down hill from there, he shot a 391 in kneeling position and dropped to 15th spot and in the standing he shot 379 to shoot an overall 1167 and was placed 21st. Sanjeev Rajput started poorly with a 387 in the prone and in kneeling shot a good 393 but in standing shot a 377 to be placed 32nd in a field of 39. That ends the shooting program for Indian's. We had 15 athletes in shooting and 1 finalist and zero medal. Lot was expected from this contingent but we only ended up with disappointment.

Huge disappointment, to start the day. Amit Panghal lost in pre-quarters to Columbia's Herney Yuberjen Rivas Martinez in the men's Fly. He started ok in the first round but from second round Amit was literally running away from the Columbian boxer... Third round was just so sad to watch.. something went horribly wrong ... Either Amit was injured or he pressure got to him...

India at Tokyo 2020 - Our Performance on Day 8- 30th July 2021

 Archery

Deepika Kumari beat Ksenia Perova in pre-quarters to get to the quarter finals. It also went to the shoot off and Deepika came out on top.. Deepika lost in the quarter finals against the the Korean An San. The match started with Deepika shooting a 7 and the Korean shooting a 10 and the Korean was on top through the match. She lost in straight sets 6-0. Korean went on to win the Gold eventually. Our wait for the archery medal continues right from the days of Limba Ram.

Athletics -
Athletics starts on 30th July

Avinash Sable finished 7th in the 3000m Steeplechase heat 2. He created a national rank. However, that was not good enough to make it to semis. Luck also didn't play a part as in the next heat all 3 qualifiers were slower than Avinash. If only he had been in the next heat :(. He was the 13th fastest in the field of 42. He ran a 8.18.12 and earlier national record was 8.20.20 (which was also his record)

MP Jabir finished last in his heat in 400 m hurdles heats 5. He finished overall 33rd in a field of 36.  He ran a 50.77 (PB of 49.13)

Not much was expected of Dutee Chand in 100m heatsShe finished 7th in her heat and overall 45th in a field of 54.  She ran a 11.54 (PB 11.17)

4*400 Mixed relay team - We had 3 from Tamil nadu in the team, I don't remember such a line up mostly Tamil nadu runners. Finished last in the heat way behind others.. We were 6th after the first change over and last after Revathi's leg and after Subha the gap got worser and Rajiv was like 200meters behind when he started and finished about 10 second behind the first placed Polish team.

Badminton -

Sindhu defeated Akane Jamguchi in the Quarters in straight games. It was a completely dominating performance. There was a moment in the second game when Akane was on couple of game points but Sindhu came back to win it.

Boxing -

Simranjit lost to Thailand's Sudaporn Seesondee in the pre-quarters. In the first round I personally felt Simranjit fought really well but all 5 judges thought the Thai boxer won it. In the second round Simranjit was trying to force her way to scoring but let her guard down which was taken advantage by the Thai boxer who won the second round convincingly. Once you lose 2 rounds on all 5 cards it is very difficult to come back in the 3rd which is what happened and Thailand boxer won it 5-0.

Lovlina defeated Chinese Taipei's Chin Nien Chen in the Quarter finals. Taipei's boxer is a former world champion and had defeated Lovlina in their last 2 meetings. Lovlina had a clear strategy of fighting from distance and used her reach and height advantage beautifully. First round both boxers were cagey was finding what the other was trying to do and both landed few blows but Navnit came on top 3-2 and in the second round Lovlina fought really well using her height and own it 4-1. After losing 2 rounds the Taipei boxer needed a very bring round in the 3rd which was not to be and Lovlina was using her height and not giving much chance for the Taipei boxer to come back to win it. She is not assured of a medal. Next up the Turkey boxer who looks very strong. Hope Lovlina and the coaches come up with a clear strategy to defeat her. It's going to be very tough for Lovlina in semis.

Equestrian -

5 am - Fouuad Mirza is placed 7th in the field of 42 (total 63 competitors) after the completion of 2 of 3 sessions of Dressage. There is still Cross Country and Jumping left.

Golf -

The action was interrupted due to lightning.

Hockey -

Indian women beat Ireland 1-0 in Pool A match. It was a must win match for the Indians. The Indian's are struggling still to finish anything in the D. They made so many entries to the D but couldn't finish it. Gurjit was not in the pitch and all our penalty corners was coming to nothing as Grace was not able to do much with them. Finally India was able to break the deadlock in the last 5 minutes to win in 1-0.
Indian men defeated Japan 5-3 in the final Pool A match. We had already qualified for the quarter finals and confirmed second spot in Pool A. They had rested some of the players like Rupinder and Mandeep Singh.

Sailing -

Nethra Kumanan finished 37th and 38th in the 9th and 10th race. She finished 35th overall in a field of 44
Vishnu Saravanan finished 3rd and 15th in 9th and 10th race. He finishes 20 in the overall field of 35. Really happy with a top 3 finish at least in one race for Vishnu.
Ganapathy and Varun finished 17th, 11th and 16th in the 7th, 8th and 9th race. They are currently placed 17th overall.

Shooting -

Manu Bhaker, Rahi Sarnobat shot 582 and 573 to finish 15th and 32nd in the 25m Pistol. The dry run in shooting continued even today.

In the pistol event, Abhishek's poor run in the qualifying continued and Yashaswini also was not firing. Manu also was not at her peak and Saurabh was the only one in good form in the pistol event. Manu and Saurabh were first after the Qualification round 1 but shot poorly in round 2 and didn't progress to the medal matches. Abhishek and Yashaswini got knocked out in the qualification round 1 itself as they finished 17th in a field of 20

In the Rifle event the poor form of our shooters continued. Elavenil and Divyansh finished 12th and Anjum and Deepak finished 18th in the 29 team field and were knocked out in the first round itself.

There was much expected from our shooting contingent and it has been complete disaster so far.

Artistic Gymnastics - Pranati Nayak finished 79th out of 80 contestants in overall.

Badminton -

Sindhu beat Israel's Ksenia Polikarpova in straight games without much issue.

Boxing

MC Mary Kom beat Dominican Republic's GARCIA Miguelina HERNANDEZ 4-1. It was even stevens after first 2 rounds but Mary came out steonger in the third round to win

Manish Kaushik lost to Britain's Luke McCormack 4-1. This was also a close match till second round. In the third round the British came out stronger to defeat Manish.

Hockey -

Indian were thrashed by Australia 7-1 in pool A match. It is better to forget about this match and move on.

Rowing

Indian pair finished 3rd and qualified for the semi finals.  Great performance by Arjun and Arvind. Hoping they gonone step further

Shooting -

Yashaswini Deswal  and Manu Bhaker finished 12th and 13th in the qualifiers. Manu I heard had a malfunction with her pistol and lost sometime. She was for a large part of time in top 5 but missed out in the last few shots. Yashaswini started with a 94 in the first series and was finding it difficult to get into top 10.

Divyansh Panwar and Deepak Kumar finished a poor 32nd and 26th. Both of them started poorly shooting a 102 in first series and couldn't get going.

Mairaj and Angad finished with 71 and 73 end of 3rd round. Mairaj started with 25 and 24 in the first 2 rounds but dropped to a 22 in 3rd round and dropped down. Angad shot 24, 25 and 24 in the three rounds. Hope both have a better day tomorrow and make it to the finals.

Sailing -

Nethra Kumanan finished 33rd and 16th in the first two races. She was in top 4 in the second race mid way but dropped down.

Vishnu Saravanan finished 14th in his first race. His second race got postponed to tomorrow.

Let us hope they both have better days tomorrow and day after.

Swimming -

Maana patel finished 2nd in her 100m backstroke heat which was the slowest heat. She has a PB of 1.03:77 and swam a 1.05:20 today. She finished 39th out of 41 swimmers

Srihari was in the 3rd heat and swam a 54.31. He qualified for olympics swimming a 53.77 and if he had swam that he would have made it to the semis. Sadly not to be.

Table Tennis -

Sathiyan was leading 3-1 against Hong Kong's Siu Hang Lam but sadly lost 4-3

Manika Batra took on Ukraine's Maragaryta Pesotska in another second round match. Manika came back from 0-2 and 2-3 to defeat the 20th seeded Ukrainian 4-3.

Tennis

7:30am Saina and Ankita lost their first round doubles match to the Ukraine Kichenok sisters in 3 sets. They won the first set 6-0 and were a break up in second but just blew it. The Ukranians ran 8 point lead in the third set tie break and the Indians clawed back to 8-8 but lost eventually.

Overall a disappointing day. Rowers were the standout performance of the day

Saturday 24 July 2021

India at Tokyo 2020 - Review of day 2 performance 24-July

Archery - There was a change in the team as the management felt Pravin was shooting better than Atanu. They faced Chinese Taipei in the pre-quarters and they won that match 5-3. As mentioned yesterday,  due to the poor performance of the men in the ranking round, our team ranking also got affected.  We were against the eventual champions Korea in the quarters and we lost the match 6-2. We were completely outclassed by the Koreans.

Rowing - Arvind Lal and Arjun finished 5th in thr Men's Light weight  double skulls heats. Given that their aim was to get a Top 12 finish, have to watch what they do in the Repachage round tomorrow.   Their timing was the 10th best in the field.

Weightlifting - Mirabhai Chanu won the first medal for India and as expected got a silver.  Once the Chinese liftedba olymoic record 94kg in the snatch and tookna 7 kg lead over Chanu, it was going to be an uphill task for Chanu. Happy that she put to rest the misery of Rio 2016 where she didnt have even a single clean and jerk lift which caused her to miss out on a medal.

Shooting - Elavenil and Apurvi both got knocked out in the qualification round itself. Elavenil finished 16th and Apurvi 36th. Around the 4th series Elavenil was as high at 11th but didn't finish well. Apurvi was down in mid 20s most of the time and finished a poor 36th. In the Air pistol event both Saurabh and Abhishek started poorly in the first round. Saurabh started shooting better from 2nd round and finished on top in the qualifiers. Abhishek started shooting better from the 3rd round. He was in top 5 till the last 3 shots and shot couple of 8s and that ruined his changes of making the finals and he ended up 17th. In the finals Saurabh starred very poorly and that ruined his changes. He was 8th at the end of first 10 shots but finished 7th and was the second to be knocked out in the finals. Overall a disappointing performance from our shooters today.

Badminton - Sai Praneeth continued his recent poor form and lost to Israel's Misha Zilbermann tamely in straight sets ruining his changes of progressing beyond group stage. The surprise result was the doubles team of Rankireddy and Chirag beating the third seed Chinese Taipei Team in a hard fought match in 3 games.

Hockey - Indian men started off their campaign with a victory over New Zealand.  New zealand had an early lead and India came back to lead 3-1 before conceding a goal in the 4th quarter. The Indian women played beautifully against the strong Dutch till mid of third quarter holding them 1-1 before losing 5-1.

Judo - Shushila Likmabam lost to Hungary's Eva CSERNOVICZKI in her round of 32 match and ended her campaign.

Table Tennis - Sharath Kamal and Manika Batra lost to the 3rd Seeded Chinese Taipei Team in straight games. The Taipei team was way too strong for the Indian pair.

Manika Batra defeated British HO Tin-Tin in straight games. Even though Manika gave 4-5 point lead in 3rd and 4th games she was strong for the Britisher.

Suhirtha defeated Sweden's Linda Bergstroem 4-3. The match was going back and forth till the last game where Suhirtha came out on top.

Tennis - Sumit Nagal defeated Denis Istomin in 3

Boxing - Vikas was defeated by Japan's Sewonrets Quincy Mensah OKAZAWA in an unanimous decision 5-0.  Vikas was completely out played by the Japanese boxer. Vikas had no clue against the Japanese boxer. I was personally expecting much from the experienced Vikas but he lost tamely.
