Parvez Rasool - Great chance to give him the Indian cap - Missed

Parvez Rasool the 24 year old Kashmiri cricketer was selected for the Indian team that toured the Zimbabwe.

He was the first Kashmiri cricketer to have been selected for the Indian team. This was a great moment for Jammu & Kashmir cricket which had not produced any great sports persons. (there was Mithun Manhas who plays for Delhi and also in IPL). Parvez was the only guy who plays for Kashmir and was picked for the Indian team.

He played couple of matches for Pune Warriors in this year's IPL. What I made out of him was that he was ok, didn't see anything great. Being a spinner in India, you need have variations to be selected. In the limited chances he got in IPL, he didn't exhibit many variations..

It was rumored that it was more of a tokenism to select him. Whatever be the reason for selecting him, the opponents for the last series, Zimbabwe, was the best team to test out all our bench strength. With line with that thought the selection panel had also rested many senior players.

The team did a good thing in giving good opportunities to Amit Mishra, Shami Mohamed & Jayadev Unadkat,  Pujara, Vinay Kumar & Mohit Sharma who all got at least 2 matches. The only person who was in the touring party who didn't get a game was Parvez Rasool.

Parvez Rasool not being selected to play even a single match against Zimbabwe only strengthens the rumor that his selection to the 15 was more tokenism.

Virat Kohli has defended his decision that he couldn't drop a guy like Jadeja (who is today the No 1 ODI bowler.. what a shame.. that's a topic for another day).. When the selectors could rest guys like Dhoni, Bhuvaneshwar Kumar & Ashwin for the entire series, why was it difficult to rest Jadeja for a game or two?

If I was in the Virat Kohli's position, I would have definitely taken the tokenism to the next level and have played him in one match at least. Even if had bowled pathetically we wouldn't have lost the match.

Now coming to side part of the whole story... On Saturday when the match was just starting.. there were a series of tweets from the J&K CM asking BCCI whether they had to take him all the way to Zimbabwe to demoralize him and that it would have been cheaper to do it in India...

Great to see that a CM is supporting his state cricketer but on what basis was he saying that Parvez was demoralized? Agreed that Parvez would have been disappointed that he didn't get a chance to play a single match but he should gain experience from the process.

The CM should have probably not used terms like demoralized...

  1. Being 3-0 up, i would say that Parvez could have given a chance to prove his ability. But saying that somewhere i feel that if a cricketer is directly given a chance into the national side would sound different and he needs to share the dressing room , gain some experience and prove his ability more in the Domestic circuit. If he turns out be a great spining option then definitely he would be drafted into the team

    1. Agreed but he was the leading wicket taker and run getter for J&K last season.. Its not that he is coming directly into the team... he made his debut in ranji in 2008-09 season, its not that he is just plucked from somewhere and selected to the team...

  2. I do not like Kohli at all as an individual. I am not sure what the coach did in this instance. Whether the coach do not want to experiment with the team atleast after 3-0.

    1. Our coach is the most useless coach of all... his contract was extended at the behest of Dhoni.. for which someone wrote any student would want a lenient teacher...
